Jamila Sulayman, LICSW

I was born and raised in Seattle, WA to parents, who are refugees of the Vietnam War. Growing up in South Seattle has informed a lot of my roles as a counselor, daughter, sister, friend, cousin, mental health therapist, activist, and a Cham and Vietnamese American. During my free time I spend time traveling, exploring new dishes, working on DIY projects, spending time with family, and taking care of my plant babies. (:

Background and Education.

I am a first generation college student who quickly had to learn to navigate through multiple systems on my own. I graduated with my Master’s in Social Work from University of Washington in 2016. Since then, I have worked with teens in school based counseling and community mental health settings. I have 5 years of experience treating depression, anxiety, trauma, substance use, issues with self- esteem, body image, and the inner child. I have provided treatment for children, adolescents, adults, and families from diverse cultures and varying socioeconomic backgrounds.

Therapeutic Approach.

I’ve had my own emotional journey and discovery and feel that this gives me perspective on what many others face. These life experiences along with my experience as a therapist guide and impact my therapeutic approach with a commitment to work from an anti-oppression framework.

I pull from a variety of evidence based therapeutic modalities to fit those needs including; CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy), DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy), TF-CBT (Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy), MI (Motivational Interviewing), parent-child interaction, solution-focused and behavioral modalities. I practice with a client-centered and strength-based approach, meaning, I believe that treatment is focused on you and that you are capable of discovering the answers that you have been looking for. I believe in the collaborative relationship between therapist and client as an important tool to help you reach your emotional and personal goals. It is my goal to provide a nonjudgmental, genuine, and empathetic environment to help you explore your thoughts, fears, and beliefs. It is my belief that regardless of what your current stressors are, or have been, you are capable of reaching your emotional potential, obtaining balance, happiness, and living a life worth living.

I am affirming of the Black Lives Matter movement and committed to serve BIPOC, LGBTQIA, gender non-conforming, kink, poly, religious, and spiritual people as an ally.
